We take care when photographing our yarn but colors may vary from the picture.

Aurora by Ilaria Calenzano is a fine, fluffy yarn with a high super kid mohair content, ideal for lightweight sweaters, airy cardigans, shawls and accessories.

Its delicate strand and mohair halo create a sheer fabric when worked with a single strand, or a fuller fabric when held double or in multiple strands. Even simple stockinette stitch takes on a beautiful, soft texture.

Use Aurora on its own or hold it together with merino, alpaca, wool or silk yarn. Combining strands adds a mohair halo and allows you to adjust the thickness to suit your project.

Recommended Knitting Needles and Crochet Hooks

Choose your needle or hook size according to the number of strands and the fabric you want to achieve.

  • Single strand: Start with 2–3 mm knitting needles.
  • Held double: Start with 3–4 mm knitting needles.
  • Airy or lace fabric: Use larger needles according to your pattern and desired gauge.
  • Crochet: Start with a 2–3.5 mm hook, depending on the stitch pattern and number of strands.

These sizes are starting points for swatching. When holding Aurora together with another yarn, choose your tools according to the combined thickness and your pattern’s gauge.

Standard-Gauge Knitting Machines

For a domestic 5-gauge knitting machine with 4.5 mm needle spacing, we recommend starting your swatch with two strands held together. This gives a combined yardage of 500 m per 100 g.

You can also test a single strand for a finer, more transparent fabric.

Adjust the stitch dial to suit your machine, stitch pattern and yarn feed. Before knitting your garment, check that the yarn feeds freely through the yarn guide and that the carriage moves smoothly without force.

Gauge: 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4 in

Aurora does not have one fixed gauge. The number of stitches and rows depends on your needle size, strand count, stitch pattern and individual tension.

For accurate sizing, make a swatch measuring at least 15 × 15 cm / 6 × 6 in. Wash it using the method you intend to use for the finished garment, then dry it flat.

Once completely dry, count the stitches and rows in the central 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4 in area.

For machine knitting, also measure your swatch after washing and drying. This allows you to assess the finished fabric’s halo, transparency and dimensions.

What to Make with Aurora

  • Lightweight sweaters and pullovers: Use a single strand for a sheer effect, or multiple strands for a fuller fabric.
  • Cardigans and vests: Create garments with a soft, fluffy texture.
  • Shawls, wraps and lace scarves: The fine strand is well suited to airy stitch patterns.
  • Hats, cowls and headbands: Work with multiple strands or combine Aurora with another yarn.
  • Merino, lurex or sequin garments with a mohair halo: Add Aurora as a companion strand.

The fluffy texture softens stitch definition. Stockinette stitch, simple lace patterns and relaxed silhouettes are particularly effective choices.

Care

Gentle hand washing in cool water with a wool detergent is recommended. Avoid rubbing, wringing and sudden changes in water temperature.

Gently remove excess water with a towel, reshape and dry flat.

Test your chosen care method on a swatch first.

Aurora Ilaria — for projects that bring together lightness, warmth and the beauty of a mohair halo.
